Important: If you have any Direct Loan eligibility remaining for 2012-13, request it before the 4 pm May 8 deadline. This maximizes your eligibility and you will receive the funds in April or May rather than July.
- Before 4 pm May 8th, request your current semester remaining loan eligibility, receive the funds in April or May, and use the funds to pay summer tuition and buy your summer books.
- Mid-July is when a summer loan, if you activate it, will be disbursed.
- Borrow now at a lower interest rate. Subsidized Direct Loan interest rate increases from 3.4% to 6.8% for loan periods beginning July 1 and after.
Summer Counseling Session
You must complete an online summer counseling session that is available through AidLink beginning in April for students who meet the requirements to be considered for summer financial aid.
To access online summer counseling, login to your AidLink account, select the "Summer 2013" tab, and follow the directions. By completing the 15-minute online summer counseling session—
Allow 48 hours
after you complete your summer counseling session
for your summer payment postponement to be activated with Cashiers and the Registrar.
- you will be eligible to postpone paying your summer tuition and fees until July, and
- beginning late-May, and after you enroll at least half time, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will review your eligibility and notify you of your summer financial aid award, if any.
Within a few hours of completing the online summer counseling session, return to AidLink and check "Your Messages" in the "Summer 2013" tab for general information about the type of aid you might receive for your summer enrollment if you meet all eligibility criteria.
Requirements for Summer Financial Aid
If eligible, summer aid may include Pell Grant, State University Grant, Federal Direct Student Loan, or Federal Work Study. To be considered for financial aid to attend summer session, you must—
- have an award for the current academic year with remaining eligibility for Pell Grant and/or Federal Direct Student Loan;
- have an award for the upcoming academic year from which you can access an advance of your Pell Grant and/or Federal Direct Student Loan if you don't have remaining eligibility;
- complete the online summer counseling session that is available through AidLink in April;
- be making satisfactory academic progress, after spring semester grades are posted;
- be enrolled at least half time to receive State University Grant or a Federal Direct Loan:
- 6 units for undergraduate or teaching credential student;
- 5 units for a classified graduate student.
Note: Contact a financial aid counselor NOW if you plan to enroll only through the College of Extended Studies or you plan to study abroad.
Important: Check your AidLink account now for documents you need to provide or other action you may need to take to complete your applications for 2012-13 and 2013-14. In AidLink, be sure to check missing documents and messages in both academic year records.
Summer Aid—How it Affects Eligibility for Fall and Spring
Financial aid to attend summer session may be either remaining eligibility from the current year or an advance of your eligibility from the upcoming year, but may not be from both.
Grants
- You may be considered for summer Pell Grant funding if you have remaining Pell Grant eligibility from 2012-13 because you were not enrolled full time during the academic year.
- California residents of all grade levels will be considered for summer State University Grant (SUG).
Note: A new California State University (CSU) policy limits how long you can receive SUG for your degree or credential program. If you are close to your limit, your summer units could affect your academic year SUG eligibility. Read more about the new SUG limit and how it may affect you.
Summer Federal Work Study (FWS)
- A supplemental application is required for summer FWS and will be available in the "PDF Forms" section of this site in early May.
- To participate in summer FWS, you must have been attending SDSU during the current academic year or intend to enroll in classes at SDSU the following academic year.
- It is not necessary to attend summer school.
Important: If you are not enrolled in summer session, your summer earnings will affect the amount of financial aid for which you are eligible in the following academic year.
Using any remaining loan eligibility from the current year for summer
If you did not borrow your full grade level or annual loan amount for 2012-13, your remaining loan eligibility may be included in your summer award.
Important: If you have any Direct Loan eligibility remaining for 2012-13, request it before the 4 pm May 8 deadline. This maximizes your eligibility and you will receive the funds in April or May rather than July.
Summer Tuition and Fee Payment Postponement
You will be eligible to postpone paying your summer tuition and fees once you complete online summer counseling on AidLink. Otherwise, your tuition and fees are due prior to registration.
A tuition and fee payment postponement—
- only postpones the payment of your tuition and fees;
- does not guarantee that your summer financial aid will cover those charges; and
- does not cover the purchase of books, a parking permit, and other such costs, which you will need to pay for yourself.
A summer tuition and fee payment postponement is a courtesy provided by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships in partnership with Student Account Services and the Office of the Registrar.
Your Summer Tuition and Fees
Summer tuition, fees, and payment information is available from the Summer Class Schedule and from Student Account Services. Your tuition and fees are due prior to registration.
Using a summer tuition and fee payment postponement
Your summer tuition and fee payment postponement is activated within 48 hours after you complete your summer counseling session. There may be other action you must take to receive a summer financial aid award. Follow the directions on the summer tab in your AidLink account.
You must pay tuition and fees that are due to Student Account Services if—
- your summer financial aid is unavailable for any reason; or
- your summer aid is insufficient to cover the entire amount of your tuition and fees; or
- you choose not to accept all or a portion of your summer financial aid; or
- your summer financial aid consists of loans, and you choose not to borrow from the loan program.
Summer Enrollment and Holds on Your Summer Aid
You must enroll at least half time before we will review a request for summer aid beginning in late May. Your summer financial aid award will be based upon your specific course enrollment at the time we review your eligibility.
Enroll in Classes Before Aid is Awarded
You must enroll at least half time before your summer aid amount can be determined.
To qualify for most types of summer financial aid—
- you must enroll in at least 6 units as an undergraduate or teaching credential student;
- you must enroll in at least 5 units as a graduate student.
Adding or dropping classes
If you add or drop classes after we have reviewed your eligibility and awarded aid for your summer enrollment, we must again review your eligibility before any aid is released to you or to pay your tuition and fees.
- If you change your schedule for any reason after we have reviewed your eligibility and awarded summer term aid, we will send you an e-mail directing you to check AidLink for a message about your summer hold.
- You will be instructed to complete the online Summer Enrollment Hold form and report your revised summer schedule.
- We will review your summer aid eligibility from the new enrollment information.
- If your eligibility for the awarded aid changes, we will notify you to login to AidLink to review your adjusted award.
- Dropping units or changing your schedule after funds have been disbursed may require that you repay some or all of the aid that was disbursed.
Holds
A hold will delay the disbursement of funds and prevent you from activating a loan. You should resolve any hold as soon as possible so that you do not jeopardize receiving summer aid.
Your summer aid might be placed on hold—
- if you are not making satisfactory academic progress after we review your spring grades;
- if you are not enrolled in enough units to qualify;
- if you add or drop classes after summer aid has been awarded or disbursed;
- if we become aware of other financial resources that could affect your summer aid such as a fee waiver or summer scholarship. Should this occur, we will review your award and release this hold automatically.
Disbursement of Summer Aid - Begins Mid-July
Financial aid, including scholarships and student loans, is disbursed by Student Account Services beginning mid-July.
It is your responsibility to clear holds, request an advance of your upcoming academic year loan or Pell Grant, or activate your summer loan by the deadlines.
You must activate your summer loans through AidLink (July 2 through August 7), even if you already activated your loans for the fall/spring terms.
All summer financial aid must be disbursed by the last day of summer classes, August 15, 2013.
Paying your postponed tuition and fees
Student Account Services will use your summer financial aid to pay your summer tuition and fees before releasing any remaining funds to you by direct deposit.
You must pay all or the balance of your own fees if—
- your summer financial aid is unavailable for any reason; or
- your summer aid is insufficient to cover the entire amount of your tuition and fees; or
- you choose not to accept all or a portion of your summer financial aid, including student loans or you miss the deadline to request and activate the loan(s).
